Dominican Softball Dominates Concordia College in Non-Conference Sweep
Blauvelt, NY (4/20/06) The Dominican College softball team swept Concordia College in a non-conference double header this afternoon at Dominican College. The Lady Chargers won the first game 11-1 and took the second game 12-0 with both games ending in the fifth inning due to the eight run rule.
In game one, the Lady Chargers jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning, ignited by a lead off walk to Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY). Katie Farrugia (Cornwall, NY) followed with an RBI double to left and later scored on the fielder's choice by Michelle Krupna (Sparta, NJ).
Katie Mickaliger (Riverhead, NY) put Concordia on the board in the top of the second when she hit a solo home run to center field to make the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, DC scored four runs on four hits. The inning started with a walk to Knuth, followed by a two run blast to left center by Farrugia. Krupna hit a one out single to left and came around on another two run homer to left center, this one by sophomore Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) as DC took a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Knuth walked after a lead off single by Corey Heulitt (Holland, PA). Farrugia then got on by a fielder's choice with Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) following with an RBI single to score Knuth. Krupna doubled to left to score Farrugia and Terpstra reached on an error which allowed Beck to come in to score. Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) singled to center to bring in Krupna as Dominican went on to the 11-1 victory.
Michelle Bark (West Milford, NJ) got the win to improve to 9-5 on the year, allowing four hits and striking out eight batters.
In the second game, the Lady Chargers exploded for five runs in the fist inning on three hits and two Concordia errors. Farrugia got a one out walk and later scored on a fielder's choice by Krupna. Terpstra singled to score Krupna, followed by a RBI single by Stathes who then advanced to third on a Concordia error. With two outs Danielle Gornie (Shrub Oak, NY) walked, followed by Stathes stealing home and then went to second on a passed ball. Kim Cornacchio then reached on an error by the shortstop as Gornie scored for a 5-0 lead.
DC added two runs in the third as Terpstra led off the inning with her second homer of the day. Gornie later doubled to reach base and advanced to third on the throw home to get out Stathes who had singled to get on base. On an attempt to pick off Gornie the catcher threw the ball into left field and she came in to score as DC went up 7-0.
In the fourth, the Lady Chargers added five more runs on two hits, two walks, two hit batters and one error en route to the 12-0 final.
Both Terpstra and Stathes went 2-2 in the second game with 2 RBIs, while Terpstra scored three runs. Second basemen Chrystina Tirado (Rincon, Puerto Rico) added two RBIs in the win.
Stathes improved to 12-3 on the year with a two hit performance over four innings. Krupna pitched the top of the fifth, walking two and striking out two in the win.
The Lady Chargers are back on Saturday when they host Holy
Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
double header, slated to begin at 12pm.
