Dominican's Krasny Wins 100th Career Game in CACC Sweep of Wilmington College
Blauvelt, NY
(4/26/06)
Dominican College softball coach, Rick Krasny, got
his 100th coaching win as the Lady Chargers improved to
31-13 overall and 11-7 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) with a double-header sweep of Wilmington College
this afternoon at the Dominican College softball field.
Game one was a thriller as Dominican scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lady Chargers jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning, as sophomore Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) led off the game being hit in the back by a pitch. Senior shortstop Katie Farrugia (Cornwall, NY) followed with an RBI double to right. With one out left fielder Michellle Krupna (Sparta, NJ) hit a fly ball that was dropped by the right fielder to advance her to third base and allow Farrugia to score, giving Dominican a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats pulled within one in the fourth as Amanda Mucaria (Newark, DE) hit a one out single, moved to second on a two out single by catcher Nikki Johnson (Laurel, DE) and scored on the RBI single to center by designated player Kelly Schirmer (Georgetown, DE) to make the score 2-1.
Wilmington tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh as Johnson led off the inning with a double, forcing a DC pitching change as Krupna came in to relieve starter Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY). Kristen Clark (Middletown, DE) came in to run for Johnson and was sacrificed over to third by Schirmer. Krupna got pinch hitter Jamie Gallagher (Morton, PA) to strike out for the second out of the inning. Shustine Wilson (Gloucester City, NJ) popped out to the catcher to end the inning, but not before a wild pitch allowed Clark to score to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Melanie Hestermann (Lacey Township, NJ) got a one out walk and was sacrificed over to second by senior Danielle Gornie (Shrub Oak, NY) to put the winning run in scoring position for Knuth with two outs. Knuth delivered as she turned on a 1-2 pitch and hit a rocked down the right field line as Hestermann came in to score to lift the Lady Chargers to a 3-2 victory.
Krupna got the win to improve to 9-5 on the year, while starter Stathes recorded six strikeouts in six innings. Wildcat pitcher Nikki Shallcross dropped to 5-14 with the loss.
In the second game, the Lady Chargers exploded for four runs in the first inning as Stathes and Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) hit back-to-back 2 RBIs doubles with two outs, scoring Farrugia and Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) who had back-to-back singles and Krupna who had reached base on an error to take a 4-0 lead.
DC added a run in the second as Beck hit a sacrifice fly to center field which brought in Knuth who had doubled to left earlier in the inning as the Lady Chargers went up 5-0.
In the Dominican half of the sixth, Stathes led off the inning with a solo homer run, followed by a single to right by Ollari. Knuth hit a two out single to left and Farrugia ended the game with a three run blast which brought the lead up to 9-0, putting the eight run rule into effect to end the game.
Lady Charger pitcher Michelle Bark (West Milford, NJ) got the complete game win to improve her record to 10-5 on the year with five strikeouts. Danielle Leader (Abingdon, DE) suffered the loss to drop her record to 3-11.
The Lady Chargers are back in action tomorrow as they travel to
