Lady Chargers Softball Split With USP 

Blauvelt, NY (4/21/07)  The Dominican College softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double header with the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia this afternoon.  The Devils won the first game 14-11 in eight innings, while the Lady Chargers took the second game 6-5.

DC held a 5-1 lead after four innings, until the Devils took advantage of five walks by the Dominican pitching staff to score five runs and takea 6-5 lead.  Dominican came back in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 6-6 as Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) reach base on an error and came around to score on three consecutive walks by the Devils.

USP held a 10-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth when Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) hit a three run blast over the left field fence to pull the Chargers within one.  In the bottom of the seventh, DC scored two runs off two hits and two Devils errors to tie the game at 11-11.

In the top of the eighth, USP got a big double from Sarina Lavooy scoring two runs and an RBI single by Annie Abbate for the 14-11 victory.

Laura Flint got the win, while DC pitcher Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) received the loss in three innings of relief.

In the night cap, the Devils took a 4-0 lead in the second inning off a three-run homer by Abbate.  DC scored a run in the fourth off a solo home run over the left field fence by Lauren Galladay (Aberdeen, NJ) and one in the fifth to cut the Devil lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) led off the inning with a single to left, followed by a USP error which allowed Beck to reach base.  Junior Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) got an infield single to load the bases and Ollari got an RBI single to center to score Nicole Philpot (Dingmans Ferry, PA), who pinch ran for GarrisonBeck and Terpstra came in to score on back to back walks to Galladay and Michelle Krupna (Sparta, NJ) to tie the game at 5-5 with no outs.  With one out Stathes hit a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Ollari and lifted the Lady Chargers to the 6-5 win.

Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) got the win in 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three.

Devil starter Rachel Morgan suffered the loss.

With the split, the Lady Chargers are now 15-15 overall and 7-7 in the CACC.
