SOFTBALL DROPS SEASON OPENING DOUBLE-HEADER TO SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY 

New Haven, CT (3/11/08)  The Dominican College women's softball team opened up the 2008 campaign with a double-header loss to Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon at Pelz Field in New Haven, Connecticut.

Trailing 4-0, the Lady Chargers bounced back with four runs in the top of the fifth to knot the first game.  DC opened up the inning with three back to back singles by sophomore shortstop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ), senior first basemen Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) and right fielder Nicole Philpot (Dingmans Ferry, PA).  Senior third basemen Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) hit a 2RBI single through the right side, followed by an RBI single to center field by junior left fielder Sarah Beck (Milton, NY).  Freshman catcher Nicole Scarrillo (South Amboy, NJ) hit an RBI infield single with two outs to score Terpstra and tie the game.

SCSU countered in the bottom stanza with run after Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, NY) doubled to right field to start the inning and later score on the RBI single to left by Amanda St. George (Shelton, CT).

Amanda Pindar (New Britain, CT) earned her first complete win of the season, while Lady Charger senior Christine States (Cornwall, NY) dropped to 0-1 after going six innings and allowing five runs on 11 hits.

In the night cap, the Owls held a 5-0 lead going into the top of the fifth when DC put three runs on the board.  Knuth drew a one out walk, followed by back to back RBI singles by Terpstra and BeckGarrison had an RBI ground out to make the score 5-3.

SCSU would added three more runs in the fifth and six innings in cruising to the 11-3 victory.

Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, NY) improved to 2-0 with the win, while sophomore Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) dropped to 0-1 in 5+ innings pitched, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits and five walks.

Philpot went 5-7 on the day with two runs scored, while Terpstra finished 3-7 with three RBIs , Beck was also 3-7 with two RBIs and Knuth also had three hits on the afternoon.

With the loss, Dominican falls to 0-2, while SCSU improves to 3-0.

The Lady Chargers are back in action this Saturday at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Florida.  The team will face 2007 NCAA Finalist Lock Haven University at 11am and Wayne State University at 3pm.
