LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL TAKE TWO FROM FELICIAN COLLEGE

Orangeburg, NY (3/25/08)The Dominican College softball team opened up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a double-header sweep of visiting Felician College this afternoon at the DC Softball Field.  The Lady Chargers upended the Golden Falcons, 4-3 in the first game and rallied to win the second game 6-5 in nine innings.

In game one, Felician put two runs on the board in the top of the second as Rebecca Dodd (Oakland, NJ) got a one out walk and went to third on a double to center by Nicole Degenhardt (Secaucus, NJ).  Both runners came in to score one a two out single to right field by first basemen Samantha Ortiz (Broooklyn, NY).  FC added a run in the fourth as Ortiz hit a two out single to left to score Degenhardt who had walked earlier in the inning.

The Lady Chargers cut the lead with two runs in the fifth inning as senior Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) reached base on an error and moved over to third on the infield single by Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ).  Both runners scored on a two out single to right by center fielder Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) and cut the lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Terpstra got a one out single to left and moved to third on the double to left field by Piasecki.  With two outs, Ollari singled to center to bring in both runs and lift DC to the 4-3 victory.

Senior hurler Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) got the complete game win, allowing three runs  (two earned) on five hits to improve her record to 2-5.  Gold Falcon starter Dara DeSocio (Cliffside Park, NJ) took the loss with four runs (two earned) on nine hits and four strikeouts.

Game two saw Dominican with a 4-1 advantage going into the top of the fifth when Felician added four runs on three hits and capitalized on two DC errors to take a 5-4 lead.  The Lady Chargers knotted the game in the bottom of the seventh as Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on a single by Ollari and later scored on a two out bases loaded walk to pinch hitter Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ).

After going to the ninth inning where the international tie-breaker rule is enforced, the Lady Chargers were able to get out of the inning and head into the bottom of the ninth with Ollari starting at second base.  A sacrifice bunt by freshman Shayla Esgro (Jermyn, PA) moved Ollari to third and fellow freshman Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY) hit a line drive off the upper arm of the Felician pitcher which allowed Ollari to score the game winning run.

Stathes picked up her second win of the day to improve to 3-5, allowing five runs (none earned) on 12 Golden Falcon hits.  Felician starter Nicole Broecker (Staten Island, NY) took the loss allowing six runs (five earned) on 12 hits.

Ollari led DC going 4-9 with five RBIs and one run scored, while Ortiz led FC going 4-8 with three RBIs.
