LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH POST UNIVERSITY
Waterbury, CT (4/21/08) The Dominican College
softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)
double-header with Post University this afternoon. The Eagles
won the first game, 2-1, while the Lady Chargers won the second
game, 11-0, in five innings.
Game One: Dominican scored the first run in the first game off a homerun by Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) in the top of the fourth inning to straight-ahead centerfield.
The lead would hold up until the bottom of the sixth inning, when sophomore Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, NY) tied the game with a home run over the centerfield fence.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Stephanie Carrillo (Los Angles, CA) led-off with a single up the middle, then senior Michelle Stotz (Naugatuck, CT) drew a walk. The runners were moved up on a sacrifice bunt by senior Vanessa Lagares (Meriden, CT) and McAveney was intentionally walked to load the bases.
That brought Tierney Marceau (Norton, MA) to the plate and she ripped the first pitch that she saw through the left side of the Dominican infield to plate Carrillo and give the Eagles the 2-1 win.
Senior Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) suffered the loss in 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.
Game Two: The Lady Chargers took a 6-0 lead in the first, scoring six runs on five hits. With the bases loaded, Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) had a two run single to right field to plate Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) and Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY), who had led off the game with back to back singles. With the bases loaded, sophomore Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) delievered a grand slam over the left field wall.
DC scored two runs in the second as Beck delivered once again, this time a double to center field, to score Terpstra and Piasecki to extend the lead to 8-0.
Dominican added three runs in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Knuth and a two run single up the middle by Piasecki as DC went on to the 11-0 victory.
Stathes picked up the shut out win (13-12), scattering three hits and two strikeouts.
With the split DC improves to 22-20 overall and 13-5 in the
CACC, while the Eagles improve to 20-24 overall and 8-12 in the
CACC.
