ESGRO'S SINGLE LIFTS LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL TO SWEEP OVER WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY ON SENIOR DAY

Shayla Esgro's (Jermyn, PA) RBI single down the
left field line in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the
Dominican College softball team to a 6-5 victory and completed a
sweep over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent
Wilmington University this afternoon at the DC Softball
Field. DC won the first game 10-8 in eight innings.
Game One: The Lady Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two run single to the right field line to score seniors Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) and Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY), who had doubled to left center.
The Wildcats answered back with a four run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Jaime Hurlock (Clayton, DE) had an infield RBI single, followed by a two run double down the right field line by junior Lindsay Frye (Claymont, DE). A single up the middle by Lindsay Watson (Georgetown, DE) plated Frye.
DC answered back to regain the lead with a three run fifth inning on a two run single through the left side by Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ). Nicole Philpot (Dingmans Ferry, PA), who pinch ran for Piasecki, came in to score on a WU error to give Dominican a 5-4 lead. The Lady Chargers also scored three runs in the sixth on a RBI single by Knuth and two run double to centerfield by Piasecki to extend the lead to 8-4.
WU tied the game with a four run seventh inning as Hurlock delivered an RBI single through the left side, Heather Bush (Hockessin, DE) had a two run double to right center and Nicole Hays (Bel Air, MD) followed with an RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 8-8.
In the bottom of the eighth with one on and one out,
Knuth hit a two run blast over the fence in right
center to lift DC to the 10-8 victory.
Senior hurler Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) got the win (14-12) allowing four runs on four hits in five innings. Wildcat reliever Katie Turner (Smyrna, DE) took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of work allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits and four strikeouts.
Game Two: The night cap was an offensive battle as both teams shelled out 11 hits. DC took a 2-0 lead after two innings with an RBI single to center by catcher Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) in the first and an RBI single through the right side by Terpstra.
Wilmington got a run back in the third on the RBI single to left field by Hays to cut the lead to 2-1. The Lady Chargers scored two runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead on the two run homer to left field by Stathes.
The Wildcats tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth, scoring three runs on the home run to left center by Hurlock. WU took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on the single up the middle by Kelly Schirmer (Georgetown, DE) to score Bush who had led off the inning with a double to center.
In the bottom of the seventh, Stathes drew a one out walk. Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY) came in to run for Stathes and stole second and third base. Esgro hit the game winning RBI single down the left field line to give DC the 6-5 victory.
Stathes got the complete game victory (16-12),
allowing five runs on 11 hits. Turner took
the loss in 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit.
With the sweep Dominican improves to 28-22 overall and 18-6 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 29-17 overall and 16-8 in the CACC.
