2009 Dominican College Softball Season Summary

The 2009 Dominican College Lady Chargers softball team had the most successful season in program history after earning the program's first berth in the NCAA Tournament and winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Regular Season Title.  DC finished with a record of 39-16 and a CACC record of 22-2.  The team won the CACC Regular Season and received the top seed in the CACC Tournament.

The Lady Chargers opened up the CACC Tournament with a 2-0 victory over #8 Post University.  They faced a tough Georgian Court University, the eventual CACC Champions, and suffered a 1-0 loss to fall into the loser's bracket of the tournament.  In an elimination game against the sixth seeded Rams of Philadelphia University, the Lady Chargers couldn't get the offense going and were eliminated from the tournament with a 7-0 loss.

Dominican earned the eighth seed in the NCAA East Regional Tournament hosted by the top-seeded Dolphins of Le Moyne College.  In the double-elimination tournament, DC squared off against the host in the opening game.  Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Chargers rallied for two runs as sophomore catcher Nicole Scarillo blasted a solo home run of the center field fence and senior Jamie Ollari followed with a two-out double to put the tying run in scoring position.  A misplayed infield fly ball allowed Ollari to score and tie the game, however Le Moyne rallied in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 victory.  In an elimination game against #5 Dowling College, the Lady Chargers once again rallied from a 1-0 deficit as Scarillo delivered her second home run of the tournament to tie the game 1-1 in the fourth.  The Lions scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the Lady Charger season.

Senior Sarah Beck led the team and the CACC with a .407 batting average, runs scored (49), hits (77), total bases (123), RBIs 959), is fifth in the CACC with 17 doubles and is second with nine home runs.  She was named the CACC Player of the Year, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Year, named to the All-CACC First Team, the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Region First Team, the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II East All-Region First Team and to the 2009 Daktronics All-American Softball Second Team.  She was also named the Dominican College Most Valuable Player for the third time in her career.

Scarillo finished third on the team and 13th in the CACC with a .368 batting average.  She led the CACC with a .663 slugging percentage and in home runs (13).  She was recently named to All-CACC First Team, the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II East All-Region Second Team and the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II East All-Region First Team and to the ECAC All-Star First Team.

Junior shortstop Cara Piasecki finished second on the team with a .381 batting average and had eight home runs on the year.  For her efforts she was named to the All-CACC First Team and CACC All-Tournament Team honors.

Freshman hurler Katrina Pistilli had an outstanding rookie year, with a 20-8 record and an ERA of 1.79.  In 176 1/3 innings of work, she accumulated 147 strikeouts and allowed 55 runs (45 earned).  She was named CACC Rookie of the Week twice this season and was named to the All-CACC Second Team.

Teammates Ollari and freshman DJ Jeppson were also named to the All-CACC Second Team.  Jeppson finished the year with a .344 average and led the team and CACC with 23 stolen bases.  Ollari sported a .347 average, while finishing second on the team with 15 doubles.

The Lady Chargers will graduate two key players, Beck and Ollari, this season.  Head Coach Joe Burbridge will return seven starters in the 2010 campaign, including Piasecki, Scarillo and Pistilli.  With a strong nucleus of players returning and the addition of some very talented freshman, the 2010 Lady Charger softball team should have another successful season ahead of them.
