Lady Chargers Rally Falls Short as NJIT Pulls Out a 77-72 Victory

Blauvelt, NY (2/7/06) The Highlanders of the New Jersey Institute of Technology pulled out a 77-72 victory over the Lady Chargers of Dominican College this evening in women's CACC basketball action at the Hennessy Center.

The Highlanders dominated the first half, taking a 30-19 lead into the locker room at the half. Both team had problems holding onto the basketball as NJIT had 11 turnovers and DC had 13 turnovers in the half. The Highlanders had the edge from the floor shooting 37.9%, while the Lady Chargers had trouble connecting on their shots, shooting only 31.8% for the half.

Dominican rallied, putting together a 15-4 run to tie the game at 45-45 with 11:07 remaining in the game. The lead would change two more times, but the Highlanders went up for good on a three point basket by freshman Jill Dickinson (Milltown, NJ) to make the score 52-49 en route to the final 77-72 victory.

The Lady Chargers had three players in double figures, led by senior shooter Jill Younghans (Succasunna, NJ) with 16 points. Sophomore Dana Rotio (Garfield, NJ) had 13 points, two steals and three assists in the loss. Senior Ashley Rossi (Greenwood Lake, NY) contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, respectively.

The Highlanders had five players reach double figures, led by an outstanding double-double performance by senior Selena Kershaw (South Orange, NJ) with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She recorded her 1,000th career point with 5:46 remaining in the game on a lay up. Jackie McCaffrey(Bronx, NY) and Kelly Crowe (Wayne, PA) each netted 13 points, while McCaffrey added a team leading six assists in the win. Dickinson added 12 points and Aine O'Dwyer (Ireland) scored 10 points and eight rebounds.

With the win, NJIT improves to 15-7 overall and 13-6 in the CACC, while Dominican falls to 14-9 overall and 12-6 in the CACC.

The Lady Chargers are back in action on Thursday, February 9th when they travel to Bloomfield College in CACC women's basketball action. Game time is 6pm.
