Dominican Lady Chargers Turn Back Mercy College, 86-80
Blauvelt, NY (11/22/05) The Dominican College women's basketball team improved their record to 2-0 with a non-conference victory over the Mercy College Lady Flyers, 86-80 this evening at the Hennessy Center.
For the Flyers, freshman Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led the team netting 20 points, three steals and dishing out seven assists. Senior guard Nicole Steinburg (Averill Park, NY) scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds. Center Markeisha Wigent (Sodus, NY) added 12 points and a team leading five rebounds, while Elissa Krozber (Canandaigua, NY) netted 10 points in the loss.
The Lady Chargers were led by senior shooter Jill Younghans (Roxbury, NJ) who scored 20 points, going 6-13 from the floor, and had three steals. Center Ashley Rossi (Greenwood Lake, NY) chipped in 14 points, 4-5 from the free throw line, and grabbing five rebounds. Sophomore guard Dana Rotio (Garfield, NJ) netted 13 points, while point guard Jackie Tracey (Bronx, NY) dished out 10 assists in the win.
Dominican shot 46% from the floor and 76.9% from the free throw line, while Mercy shot 43.4% from the floor and 77.4% from the free throw line. MC had the edge from the three-point arc shooting 45.5% to DC's 42.1%.
The Lady Chargers held a 44-39 lead at the half and led by as many as 12 points. The Lady Flyers jumped out to a 12-4 lead to start the game, but couldn't hang on.
The Lady Chargers return to action on December 1 when they travel to Post University for opening night of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Game time is set for 6pm.
