Nyack and Dominican Win Opening Round Games of DC Tip-Off Tournament
Blauvelt, NY (11/17/06) Nyack College and Dominican College both opened up the 2006-07 season with wins at the Dominican College Tip-Off Classic this evening at the Hennessy Center. Nyack defeated Concordia College 72-48 in the opening game, while Dominican held on to a 55-48 victory over Dowling College in the second game
Blauvelt, NY (11/17/06) Nyack College and Dominican College both opened up the 2006-07 season with wins at the Dominican College Tip-Off Classic this evening at the Hennessy Center. Nyack defeated Concordia College 72-48 in the opening game, while Dominican held on to a 55-48 victory over Dowling College in the second game.
Nyack jumped out to an early 12-2 lead with 15:43 left in the first half on a jumper by Tamyra Lathan (Temple Hills, MD). The Warriors continued to dominate the game, extending their lead to 41-21 on a basket by senior Krysten Peek (Monument, CO) with 57 seconds left in the first half.
The second half saw Concordia continue to struggle, shooting 25% from the floor, as Nyack took a 71-38 lead with five minutes remaining in the game. The Clippers cut the deficit to 24 on a three point bucket by Danielle McLaughlin (Staten Island, NY) with 42 seconds remaining in the game.
Two Clippers were in double figures, led by Dana Rommel (Staten Island, NY) with 19 points and McLaughlin with 11 points. Nyack had three players in double figures with Lathon leading the team with 14 points. Kelsey McIntosh (North Pole, AK) and Christy Porter (Highland, NY) both added 13 points in the win. Junior Sarah Sauer (Grand Rapids, MI) had a game leading 11 rebounds.
With the loss, Concordia drops to 0-2 on the year, while Nyack improved to 1-0.
In the second game, Dowling had a 12-9 lead with 12:12 remaining on a jump shot by Gisemi Rolle. The Lady Chargers fought back to take a 30-19 lead with 1:54 left in the first half. DC went into the half with a 31-22 lead on a good free throw by junior Kristen Tracey (Bronx, NY).
Dominican jumped out a 38-24 lead early in the second half, but Dowling battled back to cut the lead to six with 0:37 left in the game. However, junior Dana Rotio (Garfield, NJ) hit a free throw with 31 seconds left for the final 55-48 victory.
The Lady Chargers were led by Rotio with 19 points and four steals, while freshman Adele Laskowski (Wayne, NJ) had 13 points and five rebounds. Tracey finished with 10 points, while sophomore Shalissa Burgess (Englewood, NJ) had a team leading seven rebounds.
The Lions were led by senior Teelah Grimes (Middle Island, NY) with 12 points, while senior Natasha Page (Queens, NY) had a good game with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the loss.
With the win, Dominican improves to 1-0 on the year, while Dowling falls to 0-2.
In round two action tomorrow, Dowling takes on Nyack College at 5:30 pm, while Concordia will face host Dominican College at 7:30 pm at the Hennessy Center.
