WOMEN'S LACROSSE EARN FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON OVER CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE
Hillburn, NY (3/25/10) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team earned their first victory of the 2010 season with a 13-12 victory over the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College this evening at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Hillburn, NY (3/25/10) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team earned their first victory of the 2010 season with a 13-12 victory over the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College this evening at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Dominican opened the first half with a 2-0 run as junior Kimberly Nunez (Fair Lawn, NJ) netted her first goal of the season off the assist from freshman Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY). Freshman Elizabeth Schmidt (Montgomery, NY) recorded her fifth goal of the season off the pass from attacker Amanda Matos (Vernon, NJ).
Following a Griffin goal, junior midfielder Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) regained a two goal advantage for the Lady Chargers with the unassisted goal with 22:29 left in the first half. A 3-0 CHC run game them their first lead of the game, 4-3, but Matos tied the game 1:22 later on the dish by Karlsen to even the game at 4-4.
Two more goals put Chestnut Hill up 6-4, but the Lady Chargers would outscore their opponents 4-2 over the remaining 9:53 of the first half to go into the intermission tied at 8-8. DC goals were scored by Karlsen (2), Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) and Matos. Assists were given to Nunez and Fiorvanti.
Fiorvanti opened up the scoring in the second half to put Dominican up, 9-8, but the Griffins answered right back with two consecutive goals to take a 10-9 lead. Matos completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game off the pass from Williams to tie the game 10-all with 25:20 left in regulation.
CHC went up 11-10 with 19:29 left in regulation, but DC would answer back with two straight goals, one by Williams and Karlsen's third goal of the game to give Dominican a 12-11 lead.
A Griffin goal with 8:20 left re-tied the game at 12-12, but Williams would get the game winning goal with 0:19 seconds left in regulation off the assist from Schmidt for her third goal of the game and lift the Lady Chargers to the 13-12 victory.
Goalie Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) had 12 saves in the victory.
With the win Dominican improves to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the CACC.
