PORTUGESE WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAM CALLS DOMINICAN'S ANGELA CORREIA

Blauvelt, NY (2/29/08)  Dominican's women's soccer player Angela Correia has been called to train with the women's national team of Portugal in anticipation of the prestigious 2008 Algarve Cup.

The Algarve Cup, hosted by Portugal, is a full international tournament that ranks behind only the Women's World Cup and the women's soccer competition in the Olympics in terms of international soccer importance.

"I'm ecstatic about being given the opportunity to represent my country in such a prestigious tournament," Correia said.  "Opportunities like this only happens once; it's not very often that college players get called up to play with the national team.  I will be looking forward to going there and savoring the experience.

Correia is set to leave for Portugal on Sunday and will return after the conclusion of the Cup.

Correia has 17 goals and 12 assists for a total of 46 points in her three years at DC.  She was named the 2005 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Year, after leading the team in goals  scored (7)  and assists (6) for a total of 20 points.

Correia, a native of of Elizabeth, NJ, is an Athletic Training major.  She is a dual citizen of Portugal and the United States.  Both her parents, Maria and Manuel, were born and raised in Portugal before emigrating to the United States.

"I would like to thank my coach, teammates, family and supporters that got me to this point.  I will be doing all I can to repay them for their support and to represent Dominican College to the best of my ability," said Correia.

Portugal will open play the Republic of Ireland in the opening round.  The team will then square off against Poland and Iceland. 

The Algarve Cup, in addition to host Portugal, includes the women's national teams of the United States, Norway, France, China, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Iceland and Poland. The competition will be help from March 5 to 12. The USA, with five titles, leads all nations in Algarve Cup championships. Reigning Women's World Cup champion Germany has won the Algarve Cup once.
