Orangeburg, NY (1/20/11) The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball game between Nyack College and Dominican College on Saturday, Jan. 22, will appear nationally on the CBS College Sports Network and NCAA Productions Syndication Affiliates. The game is one of ten regular-season Division II contests being televised this year. The Warriors and Chargers will tip off at 11:30 am at the Hennessey Center on the campus of Dominican College.
This is the fifth year that Division II athletics will be televised. The CACC was also featured last year, when the Bloomfield College and Caldwell College women played in front of a packed house at the George R. Newman Center. Caldwell won the game, 68-61.
"This is another tremendous opportunity to showcase CACC basketball to the nation," said CACC Commissioner, Dan Mara. "We are proud that the great Dominican-Nyack rivalry will be televised. The CACC put on a great show with last year's Bloomfield-Caldwell national TV game. I know the student-athletes and fans of Dominican and Nyack will provide an entertaining and well-played game in an outstanding game environment."
The home team has dominated this series between the Chargers and Warriors, as the host has won 11 of the last 12 meetings. The only road win in the series since 2004-05 was on Jan. 17, 2008, when Dominican prevailed at Nyack. Dominican has won seven of the last 12 meetings overall, including six straight at the Hennessey Center.
Dominican enters the game on a hot streak, having won eight of its last nine contests after starting the season with seven straight losses. The Chargers are now 8-8 overall and 4-2 in CACC action. Senior center Almin Hodzic was named the CACC Player of the Week earlier this week after a 23-point, 16-rebound, eight-block performance in a victory over Felician. Hodzic leads DC in points per-game (15.1), rebounds (8.4) and blocks (2.9) and ranks ninth in the CACC in scoring, fourth in rebounding, second in blocks and fifth in field-goal percentage (.564). Sophomore guard Leon Porter is averaging 14.6 ppg and ranks second in the conference with 5.19 assists per-game, while freshman guard Khaleev Ginyard is tossing in 12.1 ppg while pacing the CACC with 3.00 three-pointers made per-game.
Nyack has lost five straight games since a victory at Pace University on Dec. 14. The Warriors are 2-13 overall and 0-7 in conference play. The team is led in scoring by senior forward James Oyamo's 12.3 ppg, while classmate Lafayette Curtis paces the team with 6.7 rebounds per-game while Oyamo is grabbing 6.1 boards per-game. Freshman Louis Allen has averaged 6.7 ppg and is the team leader from the arc, having converted 26-71 (.366) of his shots from long range. He was named the CACC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 20.
"We are extremely excited to be hosting a national television game this year," said Dominican head coach and Director of Athletics, Joe Clinton. "The rivalry between Dominican and Nyack has been exciting throughout the years and the crowds are awesome. It is a game we look forward to all year because the schools are only five minutes apart and the Rockland County community gets involved in the game."
"We are very excited to let the nation in on one of the great rivalries in Division II sports," said Nyack Director of Athletics, Keith David. "The good-natured yet intense contests will continue for a long time and we are happy to showcase for the nation what we have had for 30 years."
"It's an honor to have our team and our institution showcased on national television," said Nyack head coach Ted Quinn. "It's a big thrill for our student-athletes and the entire Nyack community. To be showcased along with our respected rival, Dominican, is exciting and will add to what is already a great college basketball atmosphere. It is sure to give the viewers an entertaining look at Division II basketball in the East Region."
